Golfers from across the country will on July 18 gather at the Ikeja Golf Course to vie for honours in a McWord golf tournament aimed at commemorating the World Environment Day.

According to the organisers, McWord Golf, the event tagged, ‘The Green Tee Golf Kitty,’ is a corporate match play staged to position golf as the most environment-friendly outdoor game and set agenda for discourse/concept papers on the preservation of the planet, as well as organizational policies on carbon footprints reduction, green initiatives and other allied matters.

Explaining the concept of the event, the CEO of McWord Golf, Deji Ajomale-McWord, said “the foursome match play grants entry to a team (or more) of two players from each participating organization and would also feature singles. Though the event was conceptualized as part of celebration of the World Environment Day, which comes up every June 7, for logistic reasons it has been rescheduled to hold on Ikeja Golf course, on July 18, 2015.

“This is the only sport where both noise, air and other forms of pollution are highly prohibited and if you dig deep into intentions of the founders of this game, you will find out how- while other sports do away with nature to build structures, they sought to assemble nature like on a crafted piece of land where dimpled balls can be hit with clubs.”

He said the event would also feature The Green Tee Awards, where individuals, golf courses and organizations would be rewarded “for being meticulous at taking good care of the environment and observing ethics that encourage healthy ecology for us all.”

The award categories, he added, include, the Most Environment-Friendly Golf Course, Mr. Ethics & Etiquettes of Nigerian Golf, Miss Ethics & Etiquettes of Nigerian Golf, the Course With Most Aesthetic Assemblage of Nature, the Most Colorful Golfer, the Golfing Friends of The Earth (organizations) and the Neatest Caddy.

He revealed that Usiregbeme, Georgia Oboh, Stephen Adedokun and two other junior golfers would be appointed as “Green Golf Ambassadors.’’
