badmintonOver 28 countries from across the world will participate in the second edition of the Lagos International Badminton Classics, which holds from July 15 to 18, officials of the Lagos State Badminton Association have disclosed.

The participants drawn from Ireland, Turkey, USA, Canada, Ghana, Zambia and Nigeria, among others, will fight for the $15,000 prize money.

According to the organisers, 80 players will represent Nigeria in the five categories of men and women singles, men and women doubles, as well as the mixed doubles in the repackaged competition.

Speaking at the Teslim Balogun Stadium yesterday, Chairman of the Lagos State Badminton Association, Francis Obi, said the 2015 edition would open windows of opportunities to the Nigerian team and at the same time showcase the positive and cultural sides of Nigeria.

Obi, who commended the Lagos State government for supporting the association to host the first edition last year with 16 countries, said the increase in number of countries showed that Nigerian badminton is gaining more attention.

“The Lagos state government has been very supportive of this competition, and it is with gratitude that we commend them, but at the same time we urge different multinational companies to support the continuation of the yearly competition as it becomes better everyday,” he noted.

Also speaking at the event, Tunde Kazeem, who is the Director of Sports, Kwara State, who represented the President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, commended the federation for the continued efforts in making badminton a game to reckon with in the country.
