Lagos, April 28, 2015 (NAN) The Chairman, Lagos Boxing Hall Fame, Olawale Edun, says the annual Lagos State Governor’s boxing belt would continue after Gov. Babatunde Fashola’s exit from office.

Edun told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos that the competition was part of the state government’s grassroots sports development programmes that would be sustained.

“The sum of N12m has been fixed for the continuation of the belt.

“We do not see any reason to stop the event on the account of fund as the accruing interest from the deposit can finance the belt for eternity,” Edun said.

He added that the belt which would be known henceforth as the “BRF Belt’’ was in appreciation of the initiator.

“The belt will now be known as BRF belt in appreciation of Gov. Fashola who had kept faith with the growth of the sports in the state,’’ Edun said.

He added that the state had enough fund to finance other sports through the state Sports Endowment Fund.

The former Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State urged athletes to take their career seriously as the state was banking on gainful engagement of youths through sports.

NAN reports that the Lagos State Governor’s Belt holds every Dec. 26 to mark the Boxing Day.
