Hugo Broos tries to lure Matip back for battles against Nigeria

Cameroon’s Manager, Hugo Broos, is hoping to lure Liverpool defender, Joel Matip, out of international exile in time for Africa Cup of Nations and the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers, reports mirror.co.uk. This comes just as the Indomitable Lions’ former captain, Samuel Eto’o, has ruled himself out of the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers because “I am too old for that now.”

Matip has been excellent since signing for Liverpool in the summer and Broos is planning talks about a potential return ahead of the tournament

Matip, who joined Liverpool this season from Schalke, missed Sunday’s 4-3 defeat to Bournemouth as Liverpool lost for just the second time this season.

He hasn’t played for the Indomitable Lions since 2015 and is committed to staying with the Reds rather than taking part in next month’s Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Matip returned to training with Liverpool on Tuesday.

The defender is set to return to Jurgen Klopp’s side for Sunday’s visit of West Ham.

Meanwhile, former Chelsea striker, Samuel Eto’o, will not be making a comeback to the Cameroonian team ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Nigeria in August 2017, reports allnigeriasoccer.com.

The four-time African Footballer of the Year called time on his international career in 2014 after scoring 56 goals in 118 appearances for the Indomitable Lions.

In an interview with Telefoot, Eto’o ruled out a return to the squad for the African Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers because of his age.

“Oh no! I’m a little old for that … There’s a young generation. Even if they have almost the same age with me,” said Eto’o.

Now 35, Eto’o first played against Nigeria in 1997 at the LG Cup in Tunis, before two appearances at the African Cup of Nations in 2000 and 2004.
