Manchester City are set to make a pretty penny whichever way the Champions League final goes.

Man City have the biggest night in their history today as they compete in the Champions League final – and it will be a lucrative evening whichever way the game goes.

With City not short on cash, the club’s hierarchy will undoubtedly be more interested in the club lifting the famous trophy for the first time rather than the windfall they’ll receive for doing so, but the prize money is certainly nothing to be sniffed at.

Whoever emerges victorious in Portugal, both clubs will net at least £13 million, with the winner receiving an extra £3 million for qualifying to play in the UEFA Super Cup – where they will meet the Europa League winners Villarreal – according to Goal.

The winning club’s eventual prize money will be much higher than that, however, as cash prizes are awarded in each round of the competition depending on performances.

Just making it the group stage this season saw all 32 clubs awarded £13.1 million, while a victory in the opening round earns £2.3 million and a draw £780k, according to the most recent figures.

With additional prize money up for grabs for each stage a club advances, City have already earned approximately £51.5million this season, which could increase to £67.5million if they defeat Chelsea.

UEFA also distributes money to clubs based on the size of its television market using the ‘market pool’ concept.
