Heineken aims to build image, standard of Nigerian game, says Nkwoji

Nigeria Breweries Plc (NB Plc), makers of Heineken lager, has affirmed its commitment to development of golf as a major sport in Nigeria.

Heineken recently sponsored the SPG Open Golf tournament at the Le Meridien Ibom Hotel & Golf Resort, Uyo, where Kalio Isoboye emerged the over all winner.

Speaking at the event, NB Plc’s Senior Brand Manager, Heineken, Ngozi Nkwoji, commended the golfers for their performances and sportsmanship, assuring them that the brand remained a “big friend” of the game hence its continued sponsorship which is an attestation of its resolve to strengthen and promote golf in Nigeria.

She said, “Heineken, a world class beer is always glad to associate itself with the game of golf, an international sport. We intend to help build the image and standard of the sport through our continuous support.”

Nkwoji said the tourney has also created the platform that can compete with international open worldwide, promising, “we will continue in our quest to encourage the government and other stakeholders to key into the vision of building golf and other sports in Nigeria.”

Isoboye got the overall best gross after 175 holes, while Susan Cole Kotas won in the female category.

In the same competition, Alex Shaiyen won in the veteran male category, while Edidiong Idiong and Anka Sanni emerged the best in the male category B and C respectively.

The two-day tournament at the 18-hole Le Meridien Ibom Golf Course, which is regarded as the most challenging golf course in West Africa, featured over 100 top golfers from within and outside the country.

At the end of the tournament, Isoboye commended Heineken for sponsoring the event, while promising to continue putting his best foot forward always.
