Greensprings dethrone St. Gregory, Queens retain cup at GTBank Masters Cup finals

Greensprings School, Lekki, and Queens’ College, Yaba, on Friday, emerged winners of this year’s GTBank Masters Cup in both the boys and girls categories. These year’s finals, which is the Season Five, were played at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos.

On a day where the Managing Director of the GTBank, Segun Agbaje, Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, his Vice, Seyi Akinwunmi and many other dignitaries were present, they were never disappointed with the sublime football played by the Greensprings’ boys led by their captain, Elvis Onyenze, and the attacking prowess of his teammate, Ali Wale.

Three strikes from both Bassey Charles and Wale in the first half of the encounter was all that the new champion needed to depose the favourite and defending champion, St. Gregory College, Ikoyi. The Gregory boys later pulled one back in the second half to make it 3-1.

Queens’ College, defending champions for the girls category, thrashed Federal Science and Technical College of Yaba 4-0 in a no contest match dominated by the Queens College, who gave the ‘Techo’ girls no chance.

By their victories, the two schools got N750,000 respectively, while the runners up in the two categories went home with N500,000.

Earlier in the day, Kings College, Lagos, had beaten Chrisland 2-1 in the third place match in the boys’ category to set the right mood for the finals.

The GTBank-Lagos Principals Cup is a yearly football competition organised to provide a platform for identifying; nurturing, grooming young and talented players as well as helping students actualise their dreams of becoming professional footballers.
