SUPER Sands Eagles’ striker, Abu Azeez, on Sunday led Adeniji Adele Street to the round of eight of the ongoing MTN/Lagos Street Soccer Championship at Campos Square Mini Stadium, Lagos.

The championship, which is in its third edition, saw Adeniji Adele Street picking the nine maximum points ahead of Ikosi Street, which came second with six points, while Kaka Balogun Street and Mosafejo streets had a point each.

Speaking after the games, Azeez, who was a member of the Super Sands Eagles to the last FIFA Beach Soccer Finals in Dubai, expressed delight over their qualification to the next round. He said they would remain focused ahead of the stage because any mistake could derail their dream of winning the tourney and ultimately their chance of watching the World Cup live in South Africa.

He commended MTN Nigeria and the Lagos State Government for the initiative, stating that, since inception three years ago, the event has helped many youths of the state to realise their dreams of using their God-given talent to make ends meet.

“The dream of every player is to play at the World Cup and I am not an exception,” he said. “Even though I have played in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, I still dream of playing at the senior World Cup and my going to South Africa to watch the matches live will surely motivate me to do that.”

Azeez was discovered in the first edition of the tourney. He noted that he might not have been known, not to talk of playing for the national team, were it not for the championship. Others that have qualified are Koilo, Oredehin and Olabisi streets.

The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of the championship come up this weekend at the Campos Square. The winner, second and third place teams will be in South Africa 2010 World Cup for 12 days to watch the Super Eagles’ group games in addition to their N5 million, N3 million and N2 million prize money respectively.
