• U-23 team beats Tunisia 3-0

GOLDEN Eaglets chief coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, has reiterated his commitment to assembling a formidable squad for the Africa Under-17 Championship billed for Niger Republic next month, saying his players are turbo charged to contend with any team at the competition.

Amuneke told The Guardian before the team’s evening training session Wednesday that all the players in camp were fighting hard to earn place in the final squad that would make it to Niger.

The former African Footballer of the Year said he was working hard to send his final team list to the NFF because he has barely two weeks to the kick off of the competition, adding, however, that he was not under pressure ahead of the tournament.

“All the players in camp are fighting hard to get a place in my final team and they are aware of the task ahead. My final list would soon be sent to the NFF,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, the national Under-23 team yesterday avenged their defeat at the hands of their Tunisian counterparts by beating the North Africans 3-0 in a friendly played in Tunis.

The coach Samson Siasia-led team lost the first game 5-30.

The Nigeria lads opened scoring in the 31st minute when Oghenekaro Etebor converted a spot kick after Peter Onyekachi was fouled in the 18-yard box.

Onyekachi doubled Nigeria’s lead with a 56th minute strike after good work in the midfield by Azubuike Okechukwu and Oghenekaro.

Oghenekaro ballooned a penalty kick way over the bar in the 69th minute after Stanley Amuzie’s cross was handled by a Tunisia defender.

Godwin Saviour put the game beyond the Tunisians when he fired home a canon shot in the 88th minute after running down the opposing defenders.
