FIFA delays bidding for 2026 World Cup amid corruption scandal
FIFA would delay the bidding to host the 2026 World Cup because of a high-profile investigation into alleged corruption at the world football governing body, a top official said on Wednesday.
Jerome Valcke, the FIFA secretary general, said at a conference that it would be absurd to begin the next bidding amid the current scandal.
Report says Russia will host the 2018 World Cup.
Canada, Mexico and Colombia have so far expressed intentions to host the tournament in 2026.
Valcke, who has been implicated in the multimillion-dollar bribery scandal, defended himself and the organisation in comments to the Russian press, attesting that he has done nothing wrong and has nothing to hide.
“I will answer all the questions,’’ he said.
