The dream of the Nigerian football family to immortalise late football legend, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, got a boost at the weekend. The Enogie of Obazuwa, Prince Edun

Akenzua, and his people donated a parcel of land measuring 1000 x 1000 for the construction of the Stephen Keshi Football and Vocational Training Centre.

The Enogie announced the donation during the groundbreaking ceremony at the weekend in Obazuwa Community Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The parcel of land, he said, was given out free of charge, adding that he was delighted to contribute to the plans to immortalise a football icon, who gave his all in his time.

The monarch, represented by his nephew, Prince Ewaenosefe Iyieweka, said, “Keshi started his football career in Benin City. The glorious career took him to Europe, America and all over Africa and he was a successful player and coach.”

Prince Akenzua said when the National Association of Nigeria Professional footballers (NANPF) approached him with a request to give them a parcel of land to establish the Football and Vocational Training Centre, four considerations ran through his mind.

First, the request gave him the opportunity to do “something good for our generation and the generation yet unborn.

“Second, I was happy to hear that the centre would be named after our illustrious son, Stephen Keshi, who departed this world at a young age of 54 only recently after a successful football career.”

He added that with time he would inform the association his plans and how to support the Keshi project.

The high point of the occasion was the groundbreaking formalities performed by Dr. Moses Aghedo, Vice Chairman, Edo Football Association, who represented Edo FA Chairman and NFF President, Amaju Pinnick at the occasion.
