Dolphins Set League Record, As First Bank Beat Sunshine Angels

Dolphins’ Amaka Nwakamma, a point guard, also set a record for points in a game with 42 points. She shot over 50 per cent from the field and 60 per cent from the free throw line, a performance, which, she said, was to prove to their opponents that she has what it takes to run down any team.

“My performance was impressive, but I want to thank my team mates for creating the room for me to express myself offensively,” she said.

Dolphins continue to sit atop Group B with 22 points and a perfect 11 wins from 11 games from the first phase in Abuja. In other games, 2013 champions, First Deepwater of Lagos, continued their quest to make the trip to the 2015 final eight, as they grabbed their third win from three games on Thursday against the Nigerian Immigrations, who they defeated by 65 to 39 points.

The Deepwater girls were led by captain Blessing Emmanuel, who scored 18 points with five assists and five steals to give the former champions a 100 per cent record in Ilorin.

Adolescent Health and Information Project (AHIP) Queens of Kano gave a brave performance against hard fighting Benue Princess to join First Bank, First Deepwater, IGP Queens, Delta Force and the Nigerian Customs on a perfect 3-0 record in the second phase of the league.

The AHIP Queens, who managed four wins in the first phase in Abuja, held on for a two-point victory after a second half fight back from Benue Princess to win by 48 to 46 points.

Defending champions, First Bank of Lagos, also put up a good performance, as they became the first team to score 90 points in the second phase of the league. Four-time time league MVP, Nkechi Akashili, led the Elephant girls to a 90 to 28 points victory over the Ondo’s Sunshine Angels.

She scored 24 points, shooting a near excellent 90 per cent from the field. Kenyan import, Lynette Atieno, Chioma Udeaja and Elaware added 11, 14, 14 points respectively.

The champions remain unbeaten this season and are poised to make it 10 straight games when they face Benue Princesses in their next encounter.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Queens have continued to show they are in the right shape to win the league as they have won seven games from the first phase, which shooting guard, Christiana Isaac, who has averaged 23.7 points per game in the three games played so far in Ilorin, being the leading scorer.
