Veteran Coach, Tunde Disu has said that the sustenance and wellbeing of the elderly in the society was dependent on their physical fitness through exercise and sports. He therefore, charged government at all levels to create facilities to help them engage in such activities.

Speaking recently at an “Elderly Walk for Life and Fitness exercise” organized by Charity Organisation for the Welfare of Aged People (COWAP) in collaboration with Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), Disu said regular exercise is important throughout the course of man’s lifetime because as they age, many gradually become less active, and lack of exercise has a knock on effect on their physical health and wellbeing.

“Elderly people, who remain active and physically fit, benefit from a reduced risk of conditions like heart disease, strokes and some forms of cancer. Stronger muscles, joints and bones also help to increase mobility and independence.

“The benefits of exercise for the elderly is enormous among which also includes to maintain or lose weight, to reduce the impact of illness and chronic disease, to enhance mobility and balance in older adults, amongst others,” he added.

Commending the Lagos State government on her impacts on sports, he said, “Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, being a sports enthusiast, has distinguished himself among his contemporaries by sponsoring youthful events like Lagos Fiesta and the Lagos Marathon race.

“I will strongly advise him to as well extend the same kind gesture to the elderly in the state by sponsoring laudable initiatives that will keep senior citizens fit and refreshed,” he reiterated.

Also speaking at the event, founder and Chief Executive Officer, COWAP, Mr. Olusola Esan called on the Federal Government to establish a ministry that will focus on the welfare of the elderly in the country.

He said, “Our call goes to President Muhamadu Buhari-led administration and all the 36 states’ governors to establish a ministry where all issues affecting the elderly care such as medical, welfare, pension matters and payments will be addressed,” he emphasized.
