Abolaji Fatiro, Nadia Cupdupug, Shola Daniel Nifemi Popoola, Abdulrahaman Odunuga and Farouk Akinfamoyin shone at the triathlon championship concluded at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

The challenge made possible by the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), was in collaboration with the state triathlon association to develop other lesser-known sports in the state.

In the 36.8km cycling race for adult male, Fatiro placed first while Cupdupug was winner in the females’ category.

Daniel defeated every other contender in the duathlon cycling (3.6km) and running (2.7km) event for age between seven and eight years old in the boys’ contest. Popoola, however, reigned supreme in the girls’ cadre.

For the 6.6km cycling in the adult males’ challenge, Ibrahim came tops. Odunuga was winner in the 2.07km running and 3.03km cycling boys’ event for age between seven to eight, while Oseni triumphed in the girls’ class.

Akinfamoyin took first position in the 6.4km for age nine to 11 years in the boys’ race, while Jelila Olayinka was the victor in the girls’ category.

Speaking at the event, the Director General of LSSC, Mr. Adewunmi Ogunsanya, said the effort of the sports commission was due to the effort of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who wants to see the growth of other lesser sports in the state.

“The drive and motivation is actually from the governor and the emphasis is finding a way to develop other lesser known sports. It is about bringing them forth to let the state know that these sports can also generate enthusiasm, as much as other known sports.

“We discovered that we have many of our athletes who have the potentials to excel in triathlon, and we believe that giving them the opportunity to showcase their talents will be a good service to their career and sports development in the state. That is the reason why Governor Akinwunmi Ambode graciously approved fund for us to organise this competition, he said.
