South West League giants, Cowrie Rugby Football Club at the weekend maintain their unbeaten run in the local league when they beat Police RFC 17-0 in the first Premier League game of the season at the main bowl of the National Stadium, Lagos.

The tension-soaked match began with Olatunji Oduntan showing that Cowrie meant business as he came close to putting the champions in front during the first half, courtesy of a well-worked pass from Oladele John.

But the breakthrough was late in coming, with the winners relying on captain fantastic, Azeez Ladipo, who converted a penalty kick to put his side three points ahead.

The second half proved more fruitful for Cowrie as John Oladele scored the first try to extend their lead to eight points, before Ladipo converted the resulting kick to take the score to 10-0.

Tunji Oduntan scored another well-worked try under the post after a wonderful interchange of passes, to further extend the lead. This ensured that Cowrie RFC continued their eight-year league unbeaten run, recording a 17-0 win over Police RFC.

Reacting to the massive loss, Police star, Azeez Olanrewaju, said, “We played a very good game but the game is all about endurance and playing strictly to the pattern.”

In another premier league game, rejuvenated Racing RFC defeated struggling Gosar RFC by 58-0 with Monday Alex, Patrick Rotanna, Issah Zaria, Ayo Johnson, Hassan Zannaah, Amuwo-Odofin Lateef, Jafar Jojo and Adeniji Talib, running riots round the hapless Gosar.

The 2016 South West League, which is being sponsored by CMB Building Maintenance and Investment Company Limited, kicked off with a division two game between Eco II RFC and Lagos RFC, which Eco II won by 13 points to seven.
