Cowrie RFC emerges champions of Sandie Beach rugby tourney

Cowrie Rugby Club of Lagos was crowned Sandie Beach champions for the second time, after defeating rival, Racing RFC, 15-5 in the rugby final, which took place at Tarkwa Bay Beach.....

Cowrie Rugby Club of Lagos was crowned Sandie Beach champions for the second time, after defeating rival, Racing RFC, 15-5 in the rugby final, which took place at Tarkwa Bay Beach, Lagos during the week.

The tournament, the fourth edition, saw the high power play of Cowrie’s playmaker and Captain Azeez Ladipo inspired his team to victory, as star wing man, Christian Ogar, scored three tries in the second half.

Centre referee, Ifeanyin Arinze, had the game under control, as the first half ended 0-0. Both teams made substitutions at half time. Cowrie stepped up the tempo in the second half with swift passing of the ball that paid off when Tunji Oduntan sent a long pass to Azeez, who picked the pass and beat his marker to create an overlap before Christian cross over the line for the first time in the final round .

 
The 14th Baale of Tarkwa Bay, who was among dignitaries at the championship, said: “I want to thank Turbo Crest for bringing this year’s event to Tarkwa Bay. We are happy to host anytime because this tournament is first of its kind in Tarkwa Bay. Our local teams will keep playing and training to win it next year,” he promised.

An elated Ayo Johnson, the event organiser and chief executive officer of TurboCrest Sports, thanked the sponsors, the Baale and people of Tarkwa bay for accepting to host the game.
 
Nigeria Rugby Football Federation Vice President and Technical Director, Fasimoye Olatunji, said the tournament was another chance to give the local teams the opportunity to compete with top teams in the nation.
