Boxers prepare for Lagos Governor’s Belt boxing competition

The Lagos State Amateur Boxing Association has taken 16 boxers, comprising 12 male and four female pugilists, to camp ahead of this year’s Governor’s Belt Boxing Competition.

The Lagos State Amateur Boxing Association has taken 16 boxers, comprising 12 male and four female pugilists, to camp ahead of this year’s Governor’s Belt Boxing Competition.

The tournament holds at the Sir Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium on December 26.The boxers, who entered the camp yesterday at the Lagos Hall of Fame Gym located at Olatilewa Street, Lawson, Surulere, are being supervised by the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC).

According to one of the boxers, Imole Adebayo from Golden Weapon Boxing Club, who qualified for the closed camping in the 91kg category: “I am happy to qualify for the camping and I so much believed that with training and prayers, I will be the one to win the Governor’s Belt on December 26.”

He added that: “I want to commend the Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Amateur Boxing Association for organising the trials.”The state Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is expected to be the Special Guest of Honour, as the Chairman of the LSSC and Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports, Mr. Deji Tinubu and Director General of LSSC, Adewunmi Ogunsanya, are the chief host and host respectively.

Elegushi of Ikateland, Oba Saheed Elegushi, is expected to be there as the Royal Father of the Day. Head Coach of Lagos State Amateur Boxing Association, Waidi Sobaloju, disclosed that the camping was designed to enable the association present quality boxers to compete at the Governor’s Belt competition, which will also feature challengers from some neighbouring West African countries, including Togo, Benin Republic, Ghana and Team Ogun State.

The Governor’s Belt competition is organised yearly by the Lagos State Boxing Hall of Fame in conjunction with the Lagos State Amateur Boxing Association.
