Former Central Bank of Nigeria Senior (CBN) Tennis tournament champion, Abdulmumuni Babalola of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps bounced back to reckoning at the weekend when he won his sixth title by defeating Joseph Imeh 2-0 (6-4, 6-3) to pick the men’s single title of the 39th edition of the competition held at the National Stadium, Lagos.

Babalola smiled home with the star prize of N700, 000 plus a giant trophy for his efforts. He also paired with old warhorse, Shehu Lawal to win the men’s double title by beating the pair of Joseph Imeh and Mohammad Mohammad 7-5, 7-5 in the final.

The women’s’ single title went to Sarah Adegoke, who outclassed a more junior player, Marylove Edwards in two straight sets of 6-0, 6-3, while tournament top seed, Christy Agugbom combined effectively with number two seeded Blessing Samuel to win the women’s doubles title.

Alex Adewale also defeated Jelili to win the Wheelchair category of the tournament.Encouraged by the outcome of this year’s tournament, Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Financial System Stability, Dr. Okwu Joseph Nnanna, commended the athletes for their sportsmanship, while reaffirming the apex bank’s commitment to the annual sponsorship of the championship.

Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung, who was represented by Mr. Segun Akinlotan, praised the management of CBN for the consistent sponsorship of the tournament 39 years and pleaded with them to continue the sponsorship.
