Anambra gets N3.5 million boxing equipment

The Anambra State Government has taken delivery of some boxing equipment worth about N3.5 million donated by Bullet Energy Company for the development of grassroots boxing in the state.

The equipment, which were enough to kit up a standard boxing gym, include head protective shields, punching bags, speed balls, body guards, boxing gloves, punching pads, amongst others.

The state Commissioner for Youths Entrepreneurship and Sports Development, Dr. Uju Nworgu, who received the items on behalf of the State, revealed that the company also planned to donate a standard boxing ring where boxers would train and competitions held.

The commissioner said that the State had initiated so many measures to rekindle and improve grassroots sports, and pointed out that it was as a result of the giant strides of the government, that the company had indicated interest to partner the state in the development of grassroots boxing.

According to her, the partnership, which is a major boost in the present administration’s efforts to garner the support of the private sector towards development of sports, would lead to discovering of young talents early and nurtured for greater exploits in boxing.

Commending the donors, Dr. Nworgu said the Ministry would continue to explore strategic partnerships in the Sports sector to create the avenue for the potentials of youths in the state to find expression.

The Public Relations Officer of the Company, Mr. Anthony Uche-Kalu explained that they were encouraged to support the state because of the level of commitment shown by the present administration towards developing boxing on a larger scale.

He revealed that as part of their corporate social responsibility, they were trying to set up a grassroots-boxing league in the country to kick off by April 2017. He added that they would soon unveil the state
boxing team for the tournament drawn from 21 council areas of the state, and assured that they intend to partner with the state in other areas of sports.
