AFN opens camp at Uniport
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s (AFN) High Performance Center located inside the University of Port Harcourt will come alive today when athletes and officials from all nooks and crannies of the country gather to begin preparation for the Cali 2015 IAAF World Youth Championships in Columbia.
AFN Technical Director, Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama, revealed that Professor Ken Anugweje, the Director of the Centre, has been appointed to coordinate the activities of the athletes in the camp.
Nesiama revealed that only athletes who met the IAAF qualifying standards are expected in the camp. Some of them are girls’ 100 meters runners, Aniekeme Alphonsus from Akwa Ibom and Abolaji Omotayo Oluwaseun from Kwara State.
In the girls 200 and 400 meters are Idamadudu Praise of Delta, Aniekeme Alphonsus of Akwa Ibom and Adiakerenwa Blessing of Delta State. Invited for the triple jump are Uche Brown of Abia State and race walker, Olude Fadakemi Florence from Ogun State.
The following boys made the team: Idjesa Uruemu of Global Athletics Club and Nwokocha Tobechukwu of Delta State (100 metres); Itsekiri Usheoritse of Delta, Dare Folarin of Lagos, Adewale Sikiru from Kwara, and Afeez Abdulramon also from Kwara State (200 and 400 meters); Ojeikere Omon from Edo and Prior Ochonogor and Airen Williams from Lagos (hurdles); and Nwokocha Tobechukwu of Delta (long jump).
The coaches for the camp are Femi Emmanuel sprints/coordinator, Emily Osakwe (jumps), Abiodun Johnson (sprints), Chima Osuagwu (hurdles), Bamidele Bada (race walk), George Obiano (jumps support coach), Tom Nnakwe (hurdles support coach), while the team secretary is Lambu Umar.
