Ado, Okoromi, Yusuf shine, as players fail to win Toyota Fortuna
Notably, Gonji Ado of IBB Golf Club, James Okoromi of Ilorin Golf Club and Grace Yusuf of Ado Ekiti Golf Club provided a timely boost for Nigerian golf with their exploits at the annual tournament staged to commemorate the life of the late Elizabeth Wuraola Ade-Ojo.
Ado, a humble golf course manager playing handicap 12, beat the past winner of the tournament and former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, also a handicap 12 player, to the first place with a gross of 43 points. Prince Oyinlola of Ibadan Golf Club came second with a gross of 41.
The ‘iron’ lady of the Ado Ekiti Golf Club, Yusuf, playing handicap 14 distinguished herself from other ladies in the women category, as she emerged the overall winner in that category. She posted a gross of 33 points, while Obadina H. of Shagamu Golf Club, playing handicap 11, and Ikoyi Club’s Iyiola Ronke, a handicap 14, were the women’s first and second runners up with a count back (CB) gross of 31 and gross 31 respectively.
Another lady that flexed her muscles in the category was Tina Micha of the Jos Golf Club, who went home with three prizes, winning the women’s Best Gross, Longest Drive and Nearest to the pin (hole 13).
In the professional category, Okoromi of the Ilorin Old Club posted a gross of 73 to emerge winner, while the Abeokuta -based golfer, Lateef Lasisi, posted 75 for the second place, as Paul Patrick of Shagamu Golf Club posted a gross of 76.
Speaking after winning the tournament, Ado paid special tribute to Chief Michael Ade-Ojo, the chairman of Toyota Nigeria Limited, who instituted the tournament in honour of his late wife, Elizabeth Wuraola Ade-Ojo.
“I’m a very humble golfer and I also manage a golf course, but I can’t imagine myself managing a golf course and playing a good golf, it’s not an easy task. But I thank God for His grace. Winning this tournament is a great joy for me in the sense that this Smokin’ Hills Golf Club is not a club owned by a government worker, a politician, but by a private individual, who through hard work and determination was able to provide this course, which can rank among the best known golf courses in the world.
