15-year-old SS three student wins maiden Ile-Ife marathon

A 15-year-old SS3 student, Olayinka Peter at the weekend defeated more established runners to win the maiden Ile-Ife Heritage Marathon.  

A 15-year-old SS3 student, Olayinka Peter at the weekend defeated more established runners to win the maiden Ile-Ife Heritage Marathon.  

Peter, an Ife indigene, completed the 42.195 Kilometer distance race in two hours, 44 minutes and 51.24 seconds to win the competition. Peter stunned the spectators at the finish line located at Ooni of Ife Palace when he braced the tape ahead of older runners.

Iwo, Osun State-born male athlete, Akande Quadri Atanda took the second position in three hours, 16 minutes and 26.43 seconds, while Adedayo Adegoke came third with a record of three hours, 43 minutes, 18.21 seconds.

In the female category, Omolayo Harding-Udoh finished the race in three hours, 45 minutes, 49.15 seconds to win the first position, Roseline Eyenike, who recorded four hours, 12 minutes and 37.48 seconds came second, while Affiong Williams, who recorded four hours, 25 minutes and 51.16 seconds took the third position.

The maiden edition of the destination marathon featured marathoners from different parts of the world, including the United States of America (U.SA), Netherlands, Germany and Israel, including Klaus Westphal, who had the highest record of featuring in races in most countries of the world, was also at the event. 

The marathon also witnessed several Yoruba cultural displays at the Ooni of Ife’s Palace, where athletes, tourists, visitors and Ile-Ife indigenes gathered to witness the end of the Heritage race. Sango and Esu cultural display and many traditional musicians were on ground to entertain the guests.

The Race Director, Adedayo Akinbode, expressed appreciation to all stakeholders, who made the first edition of the race successful.

“I want to express appreciation for the support given to us by the government of the State of Osun, led by Governor Rauf Aregbesola and the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi respectively, towards the successful hosting of the destination marathon event,” she said.
