Omawumi unveiled as lifebuoy ambassador

Leading healthcare soap, Lifebuoy Nigeria has unveiled sensational Afro-pop artiste, Omawumi Megbele as its brand ambassador. The singer and songwriter, was unveiled during the official re-launch of the health care soap on Thursday, September 6, in Lagos.

Speaking during the launch, which took place at the Raddison Blu Hotel, Ikeja, Brand Manager, Lifebuoy, Lanre Odupe said the unveiling is part of a nationwide campaign aimed at helping two million children adopt better hygiene practices and reducing child mortality.

On the brand’s rationale in selecting Omawumi to represent the campaign, Odupe said, “Omawumi is an excellent and passionate professional, a singer who is relatable to parents, guardians and their children. Being a mother herself she fully understands the need to address preventable diseases in Nigeria, and we are extremely delighted to have her on this initiative.”

Omawumi who gained attention as the 2007 runner-up on West Africa Idols, a reality TV show, while expressing appreciation to the brand, stressed the importance of good hygiene in maintaining good health.

“Basic hygiene interventions like this can make a huge difference to the current issue of child mortality, and it would in turn help improve the health and wellbeing of children especially those under five years,” she said.

The singer cum actress played a minor role in the 2009 edition of the V-Monolugues, a play that reflects the negative issues affecting women in Nigeria. She also starred in the musical play Olurombi.

She had a minor role in the movie Inale, a Hollywood/Nollywood Bongos-Ikwe production, starring Hakeem Kae Kazeem, Dede Mabiaku, and Ini Edo. In 2011, she starred in Funke Akindele’s Return of Jenifa, and starred in Yvonne Nelson’s House of Gold (2013) alongside Ghana frontline actor, Majid Michel and Nigeria hip-hop star, Ice Prince

With her strong voice and personality, she will headline the Lifebuoy’s Help A Child Reach 5 campaign, which aims to eradicate preventable deaths from diseases and illnesses like diarrhoea, by teaching lifesaving hand washing habits.

Present at the launch event were the Deputy Director, Co-Curricular Department, Lagos State Ministry of Education; Assistant Director, Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Funmilayo Goodluck; CEO, Wellbeing Foundation Africa, Mrs. Amy Oyekunle; Country Director, Sightsavers, Dr. Sunday Isiyaku, among others.
