Usman Trips debuts with Sade, says i didn’t copy Adekunle Gold

Budding pop singer, Mayowa Usman, whose stage name is Usman Trips, who has been making waves in the United Kingdom, Ghana and other parts of the world has finally made his debut in the Nigerian entertainment scene with one of his new songs titled Sade.

The song tells the story and lifestyle of Sade, a lady he met while schooling at Lancaster University, Ghana.

Speaking during an interactive session with newsmen in Lagos, Usman Trips whose type of music is tagged Afrofusion noted that he was coming into the Nigerian music industry with the song because it blended with what was trending in the industry at the moment.

According to him, the song doesn’t share similarities with Adekunle God’s hit song, Sade, beyond the title. He stressed that he did not get any inspiration from Adekunle Gold’s ‘Sade’ or Mayorkun’s. Rather he named the track ‘Sade’ because it was the name of the girl he met while schooling at Lancaster University, Ghana.

He said, “Sade was actually inspired by a girl that I met while I was schooling at Lancaster University, Ghana. The song has recorded the song in Ghana last year and the video was shot in the United Kingdom.

“Every song you write comes from an inspiration that you have experienced. So, when I met the girl named Sade, she influenced me in a way that inspired me to write a song for her. That was how the song came about.”

“Zlatan Ibile recently released a song, titled, This Year, and Jaywon has a song with the same title too. If you listen to my song and Adekunle’s own, the beat and lyrics are completely different. I named my song Sade because that’s the name of the girl who inspired it,” Usman Trips added

Asked how he intends to break into the fiercely competed Nigerian music industry, the singer stated that he has a lot of sensational songs that would resonate with the Nigerian audience and that would keep him in the industry for a very long time.

He added that his entrance into the music industry is to give Nigerian music lovers value for their money based on the choice of his songs.

On why he decided to go the way of the bandwagon singers, who often sing about women and their boobs or butty, the graduate of Psychology says he didn’t just sing about women. Instead, he has songs that actually talk about things that happen in society.

“My EP is ready and there are 13 tracks on it. I sing about my experience and experiences of people around me. I actually have a track called Opposite Sides where I sampled Fela’s instrumentals on it and the song talks about the ills of society. ‘Sade’ is just like an introduction so that one would know that this is what is coming in the nearest future,” Usman Trips stated.

Asked what is the motivation of going into music, the dark-skinned singer who started singing at the age 16, after his secondary school education said, “I have always been passionate about music but one should be able to make money from his or her songs.”

My intention is to make money from music eventually. I released my first official single in 2015 while I was in Ghana.”
Usman Trips explained that artistes like Wizkid, Falz, Olamide are some of the Nigerians music heavyweights he looks up to, hoping that he would get to such pinnacle of success they have achieve in the nearest future in his music career.

His manager, Chibuzor Nwanah, expressed confident that Usman Trips would go far in the music industry in Nigeria. He added that he want the prodigy to become popular in the industry first before he can pen a deal with any record label.

“I don’t want anybody under the guise of a record label to treat him as an upcoming artiste. I want him to prove his worth then the record label issue can be discussed. That is sacrosanct at the moment,” he said.
