Tribute to Sheriff Adisa Anipole (1949-2019)

Sheriff Adisa Anipole was born 70 years ago to the family of Alhaji Gafar Anipole, the Noibi Adeen of Itunsokun Mosque, Ikorodu, Lagos and Alhaja Falilat Anipole. He died on March 9, 2019.

He attended Muslim B Primary School between 1958 and 1964, from where he proceeded to Lagos City College, Yaba in 1965 and graduated in 1969.

Eager to gain more knowledge, he proceeded to the Federal School of Surveying in Oyo town, Oyo State. Upon graduation, he joined Lagos State Ministry of Works, where he began his working career.

Anipole joined the services of Mobil Oil Nigeria Plc in 1971 and retired in 1996 after meritoriously serving for over 25 years.

Never wanting to stay idle, he ventured into business after retirement, having set up his company, Sanipole Nigeria Limited, with focus on contracting / construction services.

The experiences garnered from working both in the public and private sectors prepared him for future endeavors. This adequately positioned him for the challenges of politics, as desire to serve the people led him to join politics in 1997.

As a result of his outstanding managerial qualities, he was appointed Treasurer in the BATCO caucus of the defunct Action Congress (AC).

By 2003 when the Lagos State Government under the leadership of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu created 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) out of the 20 standing local government, Anipole was elected as Vice Chairman Ikorodu Local Government.

With hard work, resilience and dedication as his watchwordS, he was elected as Executive Chairman, Ikorodu Local Government, and was re-elected for a second term in office.

While in office, he was able to make impact in the following areas: Transportation. He encouraged the bus rapid transport system with mass transit buses in conjunction with the private sector, and provided official vehicles to key office personnel and political appointees in the LG to boost morale.

In the education sector, he constructed and rehabilitated the primary schools across the ward in the local government. He also provided furniture for the schools, as well as JAMB, GCE forms to less privileged candidates.

Taking into cognizance that health is wealth, Anipole ensured and supervised the rehabilitation of Ita-Elewa Primary Health Centre and provided a generating set to power the health centre.

He also ensured the provision of boreholes facility at Ita-Elewa and Addis Ababa Primary Health Centers, supply of drugs to the various PHCs, massive de-worming exercise across the various wards in the council, as well as constant organization preventive immunization programs on polio and measles.

As a family man, Hon. Anipole was active in both the nuclear and extended family. He was a prominent attendee of the Otenaike, and Jiboro Family descendant’s union meetings and was regarded as one of the family leaders.

He was a devout Muslim and belonged to the Anwar Islam Society Movement of Nigeria.

He was also a member of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria as well as the Jamaitul Islam Society of Nigeria.

As a socialite, he was a member of Citrus Club, Progressive Club, Ikorodu Oga Development Association. He was active in various social, philanthropic and political activities and remained a member of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Ikorodu division.

He is survived by a wife, children, grandchildren and other family members.
