Nigerian hotels to observe Earth Hour today

As the world braces for this year’s Earth Hour, the management of Sheraton Abuja Hotel, Four Points by Sheraton Lagos and Le Meridien Ogeyi Place has announced plans observe the yearly global environmental awareness event, which was created and by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2007, to emphasise the threat of climate change.

The hotels will join millions around the world in turning off lights for one hour today, at 8:30 pm (local time) to illuminate a powerful message about environmental awareness and action. Associates of Sheraton Abuja Hotel will support the global Earth Hour initiative by displaying a board, which communicates and shares possible energy saving messages. The display board will feature sustainability tips at food and beverage outlets and staff areas.

“Guests will be kept informed about ways to participate within the hotel public areas and in-rooms using elevator posters, guest letters, turning off marquee lights at the Pool Bar and restaurant as well as the Obudu grill house restaurant for one hour. Other itinerary will include reading the meter at the end of the ‘hour’ to ascertain how much savings have been made and sharing this information,” Nanji Tyem said.

Meanwhile, Sheraton Abuja Hotel will equally offer a locally sourced/organic menu, which includes Vegetable Kebabs with a Barbeque, associates will be inspired with sustainability décor at the associate areas, while an environmental friendly tree planting activity will end the day.

On the other hand, Four Points by Sheraton Lagos will participate through- a -cleaning -up -the –Hotel -and –immediate-environment exercise as well as planting trees. Associates of the Hotel will volunteer at least 2 hours of their work time towards this worthwhile activity; In addition, Fourpoints Lagos will encourage all guests to join in the climate change action via switching of lights in-room.

At Le Meridien Ogeyi Place, lights will be switched off from 8:30 pm for one hour to celebrate earth hour with the rest of the world. Activities will include turning off exterior signage lighting, diming non-essential interior lighting areas, using candlelight in appropriate public areas such as the restaurant and bars. In-room voicemail messages and in-room television messages will be circulated to guests about the Earth Hour observance.

However, guests will be treated to a special complimentary cocktail and finger foods at the lobby area as part of the activity for the evening at Four Points Lagos while at Le Meridien Ogeyi Place a candle light display of the earth hour 60+ sign will be radiantly on display. By demonstrating these efforts on social media, Sheraton Abuja Hotel, Four Points Lagos and Le Meridien Ogeyi Place will join efforts with Marriott International’s drive to raise funds for WWF, where US $1 will be donated for each Marriott property that tweets their Earth Hour activities.
