Just recently, the city of Dubai was named one of the world’s best cities for travellers to visit in 2020 by global travel authority Lonely Planet. The city has received the accolade in the Best in Travel 2020 list, which has been curated by Lonely Planet’s editorial team and its community of travel experts.

The list features the emirate amongst the top ten ‘must-visit’ cities for global travellers in the coming year. The unique combination of iconic attractions and entertainment destinations, outdoor and cultural offerings, and the “boundary-pushing marquee projects” continue to cement Dubai’s position as a preferred holiday destination.

Issam Kazim, CEO, Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM) commented: “Being recognised as a leading travel destination by Lonely Planet is a testament to the dynamic evolution of Dubai’s tourism proposition, and with the support of one of the world’s leading travel publishers increases consideration and appeal for the emirate in the lead-up to a momentous year. In line with our goal of becoming the number one most visited city, we will continue to build greater relevance for Dubai amongst global travellers through innovative, impactful and strategic initiatives in 2020 and beyond.”

Tom Hall, Lonely Planet’s VP of Experience, said, “Dubai is famed for its drive to seek out new world records, which will enthrall visitors. The food is wonderful, and the shopping and nightlife are world-class. Plus, in the run-up to Expo 2020, Dubai has been expanding its portfolio of attractions, which now include the giant Ain Dubai Ferris wheel, the Al Shindagha Museum and the Jameel Arts Centre.”

Drawing diverse global audiences, Dubai promises something for everyone – from travellers looking for a city break, a romantic getaway, or a family holiday, to those on a quest for cultural or gastronomic adventures.

With 2020 marked as an ‘unmissable’ time to visit the city, Lonely Planet’s expert community recommends the following upcoming attractions like the first World Expo in the Middle East, Expo 2020 with Dubai set to welcome 25 million visitors between 20 October 2020 and 10 April 2021.

Other experiences recommended by the experts include the Museum of the Future, a unique incubator that explores the future of science, technology and innovation – a concept embodied by the stainless steel torus structure adorned with Arabic calligraphy; and Ain Dubai, the world’s tallest observation wheel, which stands over 250 metres tall on Bluewaters Island, with breathtaking views of the city’s beautiful coastline and famous landmarks such as Burj Al Arab, Palm Jumeirah, and Burj Khalifa.

Other recommended experiences include Al Seef, the latest development in Dubai’s heritage district located near the iconic Dubai Creek; the state-of-the-art multimedia experience at the Al Shindagha Museum, and a collection of items dating as far back as 3000BCE at Dubai Museum located within one of the city’s oldest structures in the Al Fahidi Fort, as well as the charming Souks, or marketplaces, of Old Dubai which still remains a crucial part of daily life and trade today.

A walk through them is an essential experience – be it the Spice Souk for a variety of herbs and spices, Gold Souk for craftsman offering the very best in gold, silver and precious stones, the Perfume Souk to explore the aromas of Arabia, or the Textile Souk for vibrant fabrics, fine silks and cottons.

There is also the Jumeirah Mosque. Built entirely from stone in the medieval Fatimid tradition, the towering twin minarets framing the large central dome of the mosque provide a unique opportunity to view intrinsic Islamic artistry up close. In the same category is the recently opened Jameel Arts Centre, which spreads across 10 gallery spaces over three floors, connected by courtyards, terraces, and desert gardens. Culinary enthusiasts can also experience Dubai’s hidden gastronomic delights through an exploration of the back streets, winding alleys, and bustling local markets of Old Dubai with Frying Pan Adventures.

Then comes the popular Icons of Dubai, including the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower. Standing at over 828m tall with 162 floors, it’s an unmissable feature of the city’s skyline. It is connected to The Dubai Mall, an enthralling hub for shopping, entertainment and leisure. The sail-shaped Burj Al Arab is one of Dubai’s most iconic tourist landmarks and the world’s most luxurious hotel, promising exceptional hospitality – from its gold interiors to lush suites and fine gastronomical offerings.

Of course, there’s also the Madinat Jumeirah, which is inspired by an Arabian citadel, with three boutique hotels, restaurants and shops connected by a man-made river that you can cross via traditional abras (boats).

For beach and outdoor, the experts recommend La Mer and Kite Beach, which offer entertainment, adventure and water sports for all ages.

With the above kaleidoscope of attractions and many more stellar offerings, Dubai invites global travellers to an experience like no other. It is a city that must be seen to be believed – and with its ideal location as a global transit hub for Europe, Asia and Africa, it has never been easier to explore the true spirit of Dubai.
