IN a highly visual society such as ours where image seems to be everything, success is basically judged by how well we look.

People judge that if you have the conveniences and attributes of success it therefore follows that you are successful.

To a certain extent this is true; what we are expresses itself in the way we walk, shop, talk and dress.

Dressing up does require a degree or two of finesse. We must also take into account the appropriateness of our attire to the environment and the people we are likely to meet during the course of the day.

Keeping that in mind we must always dress in a way that expresses dignity and grace. Giving such attention to the way we dress is not being fussy but discreet. If we brush off our personal presentation as being frivolous, it exposes us as lazy and insecure.

Grooming Checklist
Enough cannot be said concerning the cleanliness and smartness of personal grooming for it can bring all our efforts to an embarrassing disappointment. The best perfume cannot mask body odour, it will only worsen it! Dirty, chipped, uncut nails have no complimentary tale to tell.
Nothing repulses quite like smelly, ill kept hair. Cleanliness and neatness is the basis of good dressing. If it means so little to one person it means so much more to another – people do pay attention.

It will not go unnoticed and it will have a very negative stamp on the perception others have of you. You must do what you must to cultivate very good grooming habits; it is a very becoming trait to find in anyone.

Make a personal check list and post it on your mirror if you need to be reminded. Mentally cross them off each day as you fulfil the list.

Body Language
Here are a few pointers to keep in mind when you think of body language.

The body shapes itself according to emotion. Therefore, it follows that if you are emotionally stressed out it will find its way out through your body language. If you are harboring defeatist thoughts then you will fumble, make mistakes and look defeated.

This is a very important lesson to learn concerning body language attitudes and dispositions; If you want to change your overall image you must start by changing the way you think.

As a man thinks so is he. Fill your mind with good, healthy and uplifting thoughts and you will be surrounded by endless opportunities of upliftment.

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8 KJV)

Our body language is an illustration of our character and breeding. If you usually stand upright with your head held high it automatically suggests that you are a man or woman who knows confidence, success and perseverance and is not ashamed.

Sometimes we miss the fact that it is by accessing a stranger’s body language that we make deduction regarding what sort of people they are.

If you have ever made such an assessment of another person then be sure that the same principles follow with you. Be aware of the thoughts you entertain and the manner in which you carry yourself and direct it in the way that it should go. Having said that, be careful not to rely on conclusions based solely on the physical appearance of a person – it is not always that you find a book that matches the cover.

“But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7 KJV)

When it comes physical interactions, before verbal communication takes place, an image is assessed and a response is formed. Therefore, the way people treat us is as a result of or is a response to the way we have presented ourselves. This sheds great light upon how respect is earned.

For example: If you want to show others how to treat you, you do that by treating yourself the way you would like to be treated. If you accept derogatory remarks from your friends then you are likely going to get more and more of them and more so, will you be seen that way. However, if you draw a line to it then something will give; those word or your friendship – either way you will be better for it.

Likewise, if you want to be perceived as diligent, smart and attentive then you have to dress like you are diligent, smart and attentive.

Wear comfortable, clothing that fits. Button up or zip up – don’t let things dangle where they shouldn’t – dress smart.

“The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head”. (Proverbs 20:29 KJV)
