Oyekanmi releases The Cult , begins work on Tarven

Filmmaker and producer of Silent Scream and Visibility Zero, Toyin Oyekanmi, has released a new movie titled The Cult.

Set in South Africa, the film tells the story of a lonely average high school girl Diepollo, who is bitter and insecure, following the death of her father.

Her mundane life takes an interesting turn when she meets a sorceress, Old Mamote, who promises to help her in whatever way possible. She develops a relationship with the members of the church youth guild and this puts her in dilemma, as she has to choose between sorcery and Christianity.

Written by Thabiso Madiehe, produced by Mamela J. Makoti, directed by Nonlanhla Nxumalo, with Toyin Oyekanmi as the Executive producer and Serge Kabeya as Director of Photography, the film starred Phumi Maluleka, Toyin Oyekanmi, Nomsa Malaza, Norah Mmusi, Tumi Mashishi, Tabea Tselane and Mpilontle Mlangeni.

“As a family, Diepollo and Mamote bond together with a purpose. Bitter and insecure since the death of her father, she’s a lonely average high school girl – until she drinks human blood!” Oyekanmi said.

Commenting on the project, the filmmaker, who currently studying for a Ph.D in Film and Television at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, stated that the aim of the movie is to push creative and technical collaboration between some of the biggest film industries in Africa.

The University of Abuja alumnus and Pan-Atlantic University trained marketing communication strategist has produced over 500 hours of Nigerian and South African films and TV series.

He is currently working on a new project titled Tavern, a sit-com, which is created to placate and cement the epileptic relationship between fellow African migrants and aggrieved group of South Africans as seen in the recent Xenophobic uprising.

Oyekanmi was recognised for his contributions to youth empowerment and entrepreneurship development through his creative works. The founder of TEM Production Limited and TEM Investment (Pty) Limited, with offices in Nigeria and South Africa was honoured by University of Abuja with Most Creative Alumnus for the year 2016.
