Is your wardrobe full to overflowing with clothes, but you still insist you have nothing to wear? You just might be suffering from ‘fast fashion’ where you want to wear latest designs, forgetting you can mix and match timeless pieces to give you a classic wardrobe that doesn’t bow to time and season.

If you are wondering, a classic wardrobe is about having key, quality pieces that will transpire seasons and trends. They fit you perfectly, are great quality, and can be mixed and matched with anything else in your wardrobe.  As usual, we have put together steps to guide you on your journey to styling like a semi-professional.

Clean out your wardrobe
If your wardrobe is stuffed full of clothes that you hardly wear, then it’s time to give away. Ask yourself what you’ve worn in the last six months.  Are you keeping it because it has sentimental value? Was it a bargain or are those size 8 jeans a motivation to lose the weight? Put aside a pile that need to be repaired or tailored, a pile that can be donated to charity, and a rag pile that you can use for fabrics or as rags.  If you’ve spent good money on something and are finding it hard to part with it, consider selling it or giving it away to friends.

Buy quality over quantity and buy the best you can afford
It makes sense in the long run to buy one or two quality outfits that you can wear for a while than cheap outfits that go bad after a couple of months. The same goes for shoes, jeans, jackets and jeans.

You can still have fun with fashion
A classic wardrobe doesn’t mean you have to give up your love of fashion trends.  Once you have your good quality basics sorted you can indulge in a few fast trends to keep your look current. Try online, buying secondhand or even swapping with friends. The latest looks can also be achieved with accessories, scarves, belts, earrings, shoes, purses and so on.

DIY
Do you have a few pieces in your closet that still have styling potential, but you’re just not feeling anymore? Maybe you have a dress that you haven’t worn in a while, but you still love the pattern. Well, transform them. Cut the hem of the dress and turn it into a top or try adding a new detail to completely transform it.

Layer
You’d be surprised what fun new looks you can get out of those pieces you’re bored with when you just combine them in clever ways. If those types of ideas don’t come instinctively to you, then seek out inspiration. Follow blogs that focus on repeating pieces in new ways (like capsule wardrobe blogs), or create a Pinterest board that focuses on layering with pieces that you already own. Seek outfits that have elements you already have handy, and then get to experimenting and recreating.

To cap it all, some quality items you should have in your wardrobe include jeans – blue, black and white, a black jacket/blazer, tailored pants, pencil skirts, black and nude heels, classic white button up shirts, good quality leather belts and scarves. Others are a Little Black Dress (LBD), classic tees, a durable handbag and a good quality clutch for outings.
