Lord Lamba, one of Nigeria’s online comedy sensations, has his mother to thank for the path he took to fame. His mother’s encouragement, he revealed, made it easy for him to choose comedy as a career.

The 25-year-old comedian whose skits are essentially using his alter ego Lord Lamba (meaning “Lord of lies”)to expose the lies men tell their women, is one of the most popular comedians on Instagram and YouTube.

Born and bred in Lagos, the Anambra State indigene, recently shared the story of his adventure into the world of comedy: “Comedy was never a thing for me at the beginning. I have always loved football and that was what I was doing. Over time, I realised that whenever I was on the field and the coach was trying to pass important information, I would make a joke out of the situation and everyone would start laughing. Even at home, whenever my mother talked, I would make a joke out of what she said which would get everyone laughing.”

He continued: “One day, my mother told me I could go into comedy because she felt I was good at it. I thought about it and came to the conclusion that I could do it. Co-incidentally, my football career wasn’t going well for me at that time.”

Lord Lamba, whose real name is Kelvin Anagbogu, studied Creative Arts, but his love for comedy leaves no room for any other preoccupation in his life. “I love comedy,” he said, “I think this is something I would do for a long time but I would also establish businesses on the side when the right time comes.”

In the meantime, has comedy been financially rewarding for him? To an extent, he affirmed: for him. “By God’s grace, I am doing fine.”

So popular has he become that fans volunteer to feature in his skits without pay.

“Some voluntarily reach out to me and ask to be featured in my skits because they also need it to build their profiles. If I request to feature anyone in a skit, I pay for transportation, feeding and other logistics,” he explained.
