It was pomp and pageantry yesterday as Oba Basiru Aremu Sotonwa (an engineer) emerged the new Sekumade of Ipakodo in Ikorodu Division, 18 years after the stool became vacant.

In his speech at the event, Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, noted that the traditional institution in society, regardless of the advent of modernism, remains a rallying point for the generality of the people and serves as a veritable vehicle for the dissemination of government policies and programmes and mobilisation of the populace.

Represented by his Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Muslim Folami, Ambode stated that as a custodian of the culture and tradition of his people, the Oba should see himself as a rallying point for the maintenance of communal peace and social development.

In his acceptance speech, Oba Sotonwa expressed appreciation for the honour, saying the occasion had been made possible through the cooperative efforts and sacrifices of the various ruling houses.

He assured that all outstanding issues relating to the stool would be given urgent and adequate attention, while commending the Osomekun ruling house for their support and confidence reposed in him as its choice to ascend the throne, promising to do his best to justify the confidence.

Notable guests present at the ceremony include traditional rulers of Ikorodu, Imota, Igbogbo and Ibeshe.
