Emerging singer, Rho, tackling emotional abuse in relationships, marriages with her new song, Black Dress

For rising star, Okeoghene Rhoda Etisioro popularly known as Rho, music goes beyond talent, it is life and deliberate.

From conception to performance, every note offers an opportunity to convey an emotion. Even in the most seemingly mundane choices she has made growing up, joining the music club, dance group, cheerleading squad and school radio, Rho was never too far from rhythm and melody. Now aged 23, Rho believes she has found her message, even as she continues to grow in the discovery of her sound, voice and self.

Rho places a premium on art, also because it provides her with an invaluable medium to air her opinions, share her truth and make her mark. The singer is convinced that her humble beginnings have shaped her up for a great leap into her magical musical journey.

Her debut single, Black Dress a fusion of Contemporary Pop/Reggae is a song themed on domestic violence and presents a narrative around the circumstances leading to a young woman’s decision to bring an abusive relationship to a violent end.

Rho explains that the neo-reggae fusion was always fitting for the song:

“I was at the time really into Reggae. It was a genre I had never really appreciated. One day, while listening to a random beat, I started to mumble, “…run away, run from the police in this black dress…”.

Lots of women in relationships are abused in one form or the other, and have somehow been conditioned to accept and live with it. No one should have to live with that; not women, not men, and definitely not children. It gets frightening in cases where people aren’t even aware. And no, violence is never the right option in addressing these situations. The objective of this song is to provide an opportunity for society to discuss an issue that is a growing concern.

Currently signed to Play Palms Entertainment, Rho is working on her first project, a tribute to the genres that have so inspired her over the years.
