Traditionally, Easter bonnets were fancy hats worn as head covering on Easter Day, representing the tail end of a tradition of wearing new clothes in harmony with the renewal of a new year and the promise of renewal and redemption.

This is a time to celebrate new life, warmth, and resurrection and is often symbolised by eggs, rabbits and baby chicks, which represent images of new life.

Likewise, Easter clothing typically evokes bright colours, patterns and styles, including the traditional Sunday attire of suits, dresses and hats for women and suits for men.

Hats have evolved over the years but their primary design and aim have not changed, they remain fancy head coverings, designed to add glamour, sophistication, colour and beauty to any outfit, ensuring the wearer stands out in them.

As another Easter celebration is here, what better way to celebrate the resurrection of our risen Christ than going to church in the most glamorous hats, ensuring you not only stand out like the fashion icon that you are, but look classy and stylish at the same time.

Lagos-based milliner, Shade Kosiobameji of Shazzy Beauty, said whilst many women might feel an elaborately designed hat is too much for regular Sunday services, special occasions such as Easter Sunday present a perfect opportunity for hat owners to shine.

“Hats and fascinators are extremely versatile and can be worn over ready-made wears or our usual Ankara or lace, you can match them in any colour and style. You can never go wrong with them as they fit everyone no matter your size, complexion or anything you can think of.”

Going further, she advised that wearers should pick outfits based on comfort and pair it with either hats of the same colour or of the direct opposite matching colour. “What I mean is that you can wear a red dress for instance and use a silver or gold hat. Ensure your accessories including jewelleries, shoes and bag go with the hat you have chosen to prevent colour clashes.”

“If you don’t feel super comfortable rocking an oversized hat, there are smaller varieties or even fascinators that will give you the same glam look you seek,” she said.

So, here is hoping you consider a hat with your outfit this Easter and as usual, we have put together some pictures to inspire and guide you as you make your choice.
