Kunle Afolayan kicks off remembrance event for Ade love

Renowned filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, kicked off events marking the 20 years anniversary of the death of his late father and pioneer filmmaker, Chief Adeyemi Afolayan, at the National Theatre on Thursday.

The Afolayan, popularly known as Ade Love, is regarded as the father of indigenous filmmaking in Nigeria. He was reputed as the first travelling theatre practitioners who embraced filmmaking on the big gauge and inspired others, such as the late Chief Hubert Ogunde and his mentor, Chief Moses Olaiya, aka Baba Sala, to begin making films.

Indeed, Ade Love was also a celebrated actor in his lifetime and has many of his children in the trade, including Kunle, Aremu, Afolayan and Moji.

Aside last Thursday’s event, Kunle hinted that there would be a weeklong screening of some of Ade Love’s classic at the National Theatre and major viewing centres across the country. He disclosed that the event would climax with a carnival scheduled for December 27 in Agbamu, Kwara State.
