Ayodeji Richard Makun, popularly known as AY, is an award-winning standup comedian, actor, show promoter, radio and TV presenter, writer, producer, and movie director.

Born on 19 August 1971, he hails from Ifon, Ose Local Government in Ondo State, but grew up in Warri, Delta State. After his primary and secondary school education, AY proceeded to Delta State University in Abraka and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts in 2003. He is the host of the A.Y live shows and A.Y comedy skits.

AY rose to fame after performing at the Night of a Thousand laughs comedy show hosted by Opa Williams. The skiff, talented and creative actor in 2008 won six awards, making him one of the most accomplished entertainers in Nigeria. He is the chief executive officer of Corporate World Entertainment. His first movie, 30 Days in Atlanta, was produced by him and he has gone on to feature and produce other blockbusters, including A Trip To Jamaica, 10 Days in Sun City, The Wedding Party, The Accidental Spy, and Merry Men. He was made a United Nations Peace Ambassador in 2009. AY, who recently turned 50, in this interview with IJEOMA THOMAS-ODIA shares his success story, career growth, and lifestyle.

Congratulations on your 50th birthday, how do you feel celebrating this milestone?
Success in life is all about one’s contributions to human development. I feel extremely thankful and grateful to God Almighty for the opportunity to be alive and serve humanity in my chosen career.

You are multi-talented, how are you able to hone your skills?
I am someone who is always seeking opportunities and setting new targets for myself. I seek feedback and also do a whole lot of understudy on brands that I look up to.

As a Guinness World Record holder, stand-up comedian, actor, filmmaker, producer, influencer, and more, how do juggle between these roles?
Sometimes I feel like 24 hours a day is not enough for me to achieve my set goals on a daily basis. But I have learned how to find a way of managing and investing my time properly by only doing one thing at a time.

In your 50 years of existence, what has life taught you?
Life has taught me to be fully focused on my craft in other not to face any form of relegation in my career. It has also taught me that humility would open more doors.

Having been in the entertainment business world for over two decades, how would you access your growth?
The entertainment sector is experiencing tremendous growth that is very visible for all to see. Entertainment business is now the new oil and gas business in Nigeria. It is actually the only sector that is visibly bringing us pride.

What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion for me is just a simple expression of me dressing the way I would like to be addressed. It transforms my body language through my style and attitude.

What is your style?
I love keeping it simple. Elegance and the occasional dash of daring fashion could pass for my middle name.

Who is your favourite designer?
Yomi Casual.

What is your favourite outfit?
Casual and urban traditional.

What’s your favourite local dish?
Seafood, Okro with pounded yam.

Determined, energetic, and easygoing.
