Another time for Beeta Playwright competition

Notable stage and screen actress and producer Bikiya Graham-Douglas has announced the commencement of registration for the fourth edition of the annual playwriting competition.

Notable stage and screen actress and producer Bikiya Graham-Douglas has announced the commencement of registration for the fourth edition of the annual playwriting competition. Organised by the Beeta Universal Arts Foundation (BUAF), the Beeta Playwright competition has over the years birthed plays from its past winners who have also gone on to experience enormous successes.

Past winners of the competition include Our Son, the Minister by Paul Ugbede, Jagagba by Abdul Qudus-Ibrahim and Daughters of the East by Achalugo Chioma Ezekobe.

The competition’s theme for the 2021 edition is Through the ashes we rise – Stories of hope and resilience in a New Nigeria. With a deadline for all entries fixed for December 28, Bikiya disclosed that BUAF has opened call for entries.

“The competition is open to indigenous playwrights between the ages of 18-40 who will be judged by an esteemed panel of judges to be chaired by the award-winning Playwright and Professor of the Theatre Arts, Ahmed Yerima. Other members of the panel include Veteran Actress and Producer, Ego Boyo, Theatre Producer and Writer, Ayo Jaiyesimi, Director and Actor, Kenneth Uphopho, Culture and Film Journalist Shaibu Husseini and Publisher Ibiso Graham-Douglas.

Like previous editions, Bikiya assured that the ten finalists that would make the final shortlist “will be treated to a writing camp, from whence a winner, who stands to win prizes worth up to One Million Naira, a publishing deal with PaperWorth Books Limited will emerge at the grand finale.”

She also hinted that for the Beeta Playwright Competition’s fourth edition, BUAF would partner organizations such as Union Bank and Shell Petroleum Development Company with additional support from Paperworth Books Limited, Olajide & Oyewole LLP, Guardian Nigeria, YNaija.com, Syncity and Bagus NG.
