Anele Mdoda, daughter of Africa, goes to Oscars

All is now set for Hollywood’s most prestigious ceremony, the 91st Annual Academy Awards. This year, host of DStv’s reality show The Voice South Africa, Anele Mdoda, will grace Hollywood.

No stranger to awards shows, the beloved radio and television personality will be flying the African flag high as she represents M-Net with a Red Carpet Special– a pre-show, which will broadcast on M-Net Movies Premiere, DStv channel 108 at 7:30pm WAT on Monday, February 25. The awards show itself will air live on M-Net Movies Premiere at 02:00am WAT on Monday, February 25, with a delayed broadcast in the evening of the same day at 8:00pm WAT on M-Net 108.

With the who’s who of La La Land prepping their acceptance speeches and perfecting their potential losing faces, this year’s hotly competitive Oscars are bound to be entertaining – and who better to get up close and personal with the stars than Anele Mdoda the hostess?

“Hosting the red carpet for M-Net for one of the biggest awards shows in the world is an absolute highlight for me,” Anele said.

“I have watched the Oscars every year and the most memorable moments for me were when Denzel Washington, Sandra Bullock and Charlize won.

“This year I look forward to celebrating with the Black Panther cast as they head in with seven Oscar nods,” the host of DStv’ s The Voice SA enthused.

“We have to speak to Bradley Cooper and salute his directing for A Star Is Born, as well as his performance in it. We must also get Spike Lee, who has an honorary Oscar but has his first ever nomination as director for BlackKklansman, which you can currently watch on Box Office. And then we hope to chat to Mahershala Ali, who was nominated for Green Book and of course Glenn Close for The Wife. We also can’t forget about Rami Malek and Bohemian Rhapsody! And then of course, there’s the fashion!”

Anele made her debut as host on M-Net’s hit local reality singing competition The Voice South Africa on Sunday, February 3, and wowed viewers with her passion, charm and energy. A favourite among her fans, the radio and television personality has scooped up several awards, including a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for Best Television Talk Show, Best Radio Presenter in the Best of Joburg 2018 annual survey and a Style Award. Anele also has an adoring social media following, and is a keen fan of movies and series.

Meanwhile, Best Actor category, Christian Bale, (Vice), Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born), Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate), Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) will slug it out, while Best Supporting Actor nominees are
Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman), Sam Elliott (A Star Is Born), Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and
Sam Rockwell (Vice).

Best Actress category has Yalitza Aparicio (Roma), Glenn Close (The Wife), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), while Best Supporting Actress nominees include Amy Adams (Vice), Marina de Tavira (Roma), Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk), Emma Stone (The Favourite) and Rachel Weisz (The Favourite).

Best Picture category has Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star Is Born and Vice, while Spike Lee, Paweł Pawlikowski, Yorgos Lanthimos, Alfonso Cuarón and Adam McKay will battle for Best Director.

Nominees for Best Foreign Language Film are Capernaum (Lebanon), Cold War (Poland), Never Look Away (Germany), Roma (Mexico) and Shoplifters (Japan), while Best Documentary Feature nominees are Free Solo, Hale County This Morning, This Evening, Minding the Gap, Of Fathers and Sons and RBG.

Nominees for Best Documentary Short film are Black Sheep, End Game, Lifeboat, A Night at The Garden, Period and End of Sentence, while Best Short Film Animated nominees are Animal Behaviour, Bao, Late Afternoon, One Small Step and Weekends.

For Best Short, Live-Action, Detainment will battle
Fauve, Marguerite, Mother and Skin, while nominees for Best Animated Feature are Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, Mirai, Ralph Breaks the Internet and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Best Original Song nominees are All The Stars from Black Panther, I’ll Fight from RBG,The Place Where Lost Things Go from Mary Poppins Returns, Shallow from A Star Is Born and When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

Best Adapted Screenplay nominees are The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, BlacKkKlansman, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, If Beale Street Could Talk and A Star Is Born, while those up for Best Original Screenplay are The Favourite, First Reformed, Green Book, Roma and Vice. For Best Cinematography, Cold War (Łukasz Zal), The Favourite (Robbie Ryan), Never Look Away (Caleb Deschanel), Roma (Alfonso Cuarón) and A Star Is Born (Matthew Libatique) are up for nomination, while Best Production Design nominees are The Favourite, Black Panther, First Man, Mary Poppins Returns and Roma.
