Yobe earmarks N9.21 billion for roads, other projects

The Yobe State Government has earmarked N9.21 billion for the construction of road, airport and markets. The road projects, which cover 30 kilometres, are sited in Fika, Nguru and Gujbal local councils of the state, while the airport and market projects are located at Potiskum and Gashua towns along the Damaturu/Gashua road.

Commissioner for Information,Abdullahi Bego, disclosed this while briefing journalists on outcome of the state’s Executive Council (SEC) meeting. He said the council has ratified a total of N8.98 billion and approved a spending request of N232.8 million for various socioeconomic development projects,

The total sum approved for roads, airport and market projects, he said, stood at N9.21 billion. According to him, completion of roads could facilitate massive evacuation of agricultural and livestock outputs to urban centres.

While commending council members on their efforts, Governor Mai Mala Buni, said, despite limited resources and the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, thegovernment continues to record remarkable progress.

Bego stressed that N1.26 billion out of the N9.21 billion was for the construction of 12-kilometer double coat surface-dressed Damagum/Gubana road, while N1.97 billion was for the construction of 16-kilometre Nguru-Balanguwa road in Nguru council.

According to him, the council also approved N229.97 million for the reconstruction of damaged sections and structures of the Nguru Irrigation Scheme Phase I.

He added the sum of N397.5 million was also approved for building of 1.5 kilometere roads linking Mallummatari/Gujba road dual carriageway, Damaturu.

He also said the construction of Gashua modern market will also gulp N2.36 billion, while N1.65 billion, has been earmarked for completion of Potiskum modern market.
