Towards ensuring healthy balance in the distribution of work and guarantee the survival of private survey practice, the Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN) has called on the surveyors-general to ensure their inclusion in government projects.

The body said, the era where one person does the job of a consultant, contractor and supervision should be over in order to accommodate private practicing surveyors in the country.

Leading the call at the second quarter APPSN Delegate Assembly hosted by the Lagos chapter in Alausa, the chairman of Lagos Branch, Akomolafe Ademola noted that projects being executed in-house by government agencies are on the rise as against their farming them out to practitioners.

On the relevance and misconception of the association, he said the only way to change the narrative is to ensure that APPSN is relevant in both tangible and intangible ways to members and the profession.

Ademola, stressed that the best way is to ensure that they promote standards and ethical practice among members and thus endear them to colleagues in other sectors as well as ensure that they keep their social contract with the public.

He also called for a proactive strategy to deal with incursions into the surveying profession to prevent the shrinking of the practice space.

On his part, the National Chairman, Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN), Yomi Bobadoye noted the improvement of cadastral practice in Nigeria, saying it was not done by legislation but through the efforts and sacrifices of some few surveyors.

According to him, the completion of Nigeria Institution of Surveyors (NIS) building in Lagos is a manifestation of a good survey practice, as one can earn a million naira as fee from the survey of a plot of land in Lagos.

He stressed that APPSN was formed to lift the practice to an enviable level so that our youth will desire to become surveyors.

He expressed happiness that the strife in NIS , Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON) and others is over, “signifying a new hope for the profession.”

In his remarks, the chairman, Lagos branch of NIS, Adeleke Adesina noted the challenges of the survey practice and expressed optimism that the APPSN national body will focus on good practice and the welfare of its members.

Before declaring the assembly open, Lagos State Surveyor-General, Oluwatomi Sangowawa urged private surveyors practitioners to strive for quality and integrity .

He said private practicing surveyors have a role to play towards improving surveying by complementing government to improve the practice since private entrepreneurship is encouraged all over the world because of their speed and expertise.

Sangowawa noted that the event offers an opportunity for delegates to learn from Lagos in the use of Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) system and replicate them in their respective states.

On the issue of government jobs, he promised to do something about it but urged them to upped their games.
