To bequeath a sustainable ecosystem for future generation, the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) has called for the passage of Institute of Environmental Practitioners of Nigeria bill that is expected to professionalise and govern environmental practice in the country.

NES stated that there is still so much to do regarding the preservation of the environment as the people has to be mobilised to take concrete climate action and mitigate activities.

NES President, Dr. Dorothy Bassey, made the call when she led executive members to former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, in Abuja.

She noted that the bill has been in existence for some years, but now a at the point of being passed. “A healthy environment creates wealth and a healthy populace.

“With the passage of the bill, environmentalists would have the backing and recognition currently lacking in their practice.  Only professionals with expertise and commitment would be recognised to carry out environmental work in Nigeria,” she said.

Amid the challenges posed by climate, flooding, pollution and indiscriminate wastes dumping in the country, she reiterated the need for government to ensure a healthy environment.

The society called on the former President, who is not only a man of peace but also an environmentalist to the core, to join in this crusade of saving the Nigerian environment.

Bassey, during the visit also honoured Jonathan with the Global Leadership Award.

Welcoming the visitors, the former president expressed joy to have re-connected with the society for which he has been a member for many years.

He thanked NES, for the honour of the Global Leadership Award and commended the society for their patriotism and commitment to the cause of preserving as well as protecting the environment.
