Rivers council to recycle plastic waste

Disturbed by the dumping of waste in the Sombriro River, the Chairman of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State, Mr.Rowland Sekibo, has directed the evacuation of plastic waste for recycling. 

Sekibo who spoke during a visit to the River, said, the recycling exercise would add to the economy of the council and as well, ensure healthy living for the people.

The Council boss said, research has shown that plastic waste poses serious  threat to aquatic lives, hence, the need to conserve the environment.

He urged the councilors in the area to come up with laws that would restrict residents from throwing waste into the river.

Sekibo further called on the multi-national and indigenous oil companies in the area to regulate their activities to avoid further contamination of the river. He threatened that defaulters would be sanctioned.

He advised residents to engage in daily clean-up of the environment and not wait for the general sanitation day.

The council boss revealed that some youths have volunteered to help in the regular cleaning of the area. 

He said, the initiative followed the directive by Governor Nyesom Wike to prioritize sanitation in all the Local Government Area of the State.
He said he will be partnering with the state government to maintain cleanliness and as well as ensure that other developmental projects in the area are maintained.
