The Oyo State Government has disclosed plans to review the building laws in line with the international best practices.

The Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Prof. Kehinde Sangodoyin, said this when he received a delegation from the state’s branch of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), who were on a visit as part of activities to mark this year’s Builders’ Day.

The Commissioner said, while the state does not experience building collapse like other states, it was necessary to re-examine the laws on building construction to make the outlook appealing, safe and to stand the test of time.

Sangodoyin called on professionals in the building industry to work as a team to achieve the desired result. He also enjoined members of the institute to guide the profession to a greater height, adding that the relevance of the profesional was thinning out as a result of the works of other sister professions like architecture and civil engineers.

He assured the institute of the state government leverage on the partnership with NIOB to increase infrastructure in the state.

His words: “This relationship we are forging will have better effect on social infrastructure in our state. It will give the people quality for their money when they put up structures, while public infrastructure will be better for it.”

The chairman of the chapter, Dr. Akeem Wahab, said the institute was set out to ensure that buildings are safe in their construction and constructed by professionals.

He lamented that quacks and unqualified individuals now take up the duties of professionals in the countrty. Wahab appealed to the state government to engage their members in the state’s infrastructural development plan.
