Kano gets land use charge task force, partners auctioneers

Aimed to generate additional revenue needed to address development challenges, particularly the provision of essential infrastructure and sustainable social services, Kano state government has constituted an eight members taskforce on land use charges.

A statement signed by Director General, Media and Communication, Kano State Government, Aminu Yasar said the committee will follow-up and collect accumulated land use charges in the state.

The taskforce headed by the Special Adviser to the governor on Revenue, Alhaji Habibu Mailemo, has other members as Ibrahim Ahmad Karaye, Special Adviser on Land Management to the governor, Director Government Business, Kano Internal Revenue Service, representative of Bureau for Land Management and representative of the Nigerian Police.

Other members are representative of the Director, Department of State Services; representative of the Technical Adviser while Hafsat Wali, Deputy Director Legal, Bureau for Land Management will serve as Secretary.

Meanwhile, the Certified Institute of Auctioneers of Nigeria (CIAN) has solicited the support of Kano State Government in its fight against quackery.

The institute is also seeking legislative instrument of the state government to review the intent laws of 1973, which established Auction in Nigeria.

Registrar of the institute, Mr. Adeleke Hassan who made the demand during the inauguration of Kano state chapter and executives of the association, regretted that the viable business is threatened by “unscrupulous elements” who are not professionals.

Adeleke explained that auctioning profession is globally recognized field with people of high integrity and well trained in modern dynamics and techniques of Auction. He posited that the unchecked activities of quacks especially in the Northern part of the country was not only to the detriment of the professional but to government.

According to him, “ Until and unless the state government pay immediate and urgent attention to activities of Auctioneers in Kano, the days of insanity and act crippling professionalism may remain unabated.

“And the implication is enormous. First it will also affect the revenue generation of the government because Auctioning is another major viable sector that generate huge revenue into government coffers and the more attention pay into the activities of auction the better the returns.” Adeleke cautioned.

The registrar who lamented absence of enable legal instrument that will further institutionalize the buying and selling of property, tasked Kano state government to take clue from the domestication and review of existing laws on auction in Lagos state.

“ Unlike other places, Lagos state government has taken bold steps in the review of Auction laws of 1973. The government went further to review the laws in 2003, later in 2009 and the current review was in 2015. This process has brought sanity to the business and of cause the income generation aspect cannot be over emphasized.

“The institute has also sponsored a bill to the national assembly to provide and inject strong legal instrument through legislation.
