Institution honours Jim Ovia, others for contributing to engineering field



FOUR Nigerians were at the weekend honoured by the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Lagos Chapter, during the institute’s 2015 Public Lecture, Induction and Award ceremony, for their contributions to the development of engineering in Nigeria.

Leading the list is Mr. Jim Ovia, the founder of Zenith Bank. Others are Adekunle Rasheed Ijadunola, Adebayo Balogun and Eluyinka John Awoyelu. Also, about 34 new members were inducted into the association with a charge on them to uphold the tenets of the profession.

The guest speaker, Abu Salami, an engineer, who spoke on the topic, Mechanical Engineering strategies for national integrated infrastructure master plan, stated that critical factors for successful implementation of a master plan would include member states commitment to cooperate in regional projects and put funding towards the functioning of the institutions through a bankable projects and updating of plans.

“It will be important for the plan to be periodically updated to capture possible changes in the sector to remain relevant. Updating of the plan can be done periodically in line with the suggested time frame for the Programme for Infrastructural Development (PID),” he said    To block the wastage from abandoned projects, Salami suggested that state governors should initiate projects that could be completed within their tenure or ensuring that the fund to finish the project is made available from the outset, so that there would not be funding excuse to terminate the project.

The chairman of the Institute, Engr. Amos Komolafe, in his welcome address, disclosed that some of the agenda set out by the institution in other to justify its professionalism as part of its commitment to national development are intensifying efforts in its internship programme for the young mechanical engineers, strategizing professional development as programme for young mechanical engineers, providing office accommodation for the institution in Lagos state, launching of career talks in secondary schools, establishing a strong mechanical engineering students forum un tertiary institutions in Lagos state, providing a forum for a code and standard for the institution.
