Over 6,000 volunteers from the continent attended the event tagged, ‘Africa’s Biggest Cleanup’ to sanitise communities in more than 500 different locations.

The events will be held across selected locations in Nigeria. The first in the series took place last week in collaboration with Wecyclers, the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Visionscape, Kids Beach Garden, and Sustainable Africa Waste Initiative among others.

The General Manager of LAWMA, Segun Adeniji said, “We are so delighted to be part of this project, the turnout was amazing and the waste from all locations run into tons for recycling. We hope that other organisations will take a leaf from this huge effort by Shoprite to keep our environment safe in line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals to reduce the impact of climate change on the environment.”

On her part, the Founder of Kids Beach Garden, Doyinsola Ogunye, the organisers said they invited children from Ajegunle and learn about recycling waste and protecting the environment.

Water sachets popularly known as ‘pure water’, PET bottles, fast food containers, along with crisp, sweet and lolly wrappers, were the third highest waste collected during the exercise.
