The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has urged the federal government to come up with concrete housing policy for retiring civil servants in the country.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has urged the federal government to come up with concrete housing policy for retiring civil servants in the country.

The Minister Malam Musa Bello, who made the call when he received the Head of Service (HOS) of the Federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi Esan in his office, sought for more partnership among government agencies towards providing high-rise buildings in the face of inadequate land in Abuja.

He said: “We have observed that the concept of building that hitherto was done 20 or 25 years ago, even for the affordable housing, is no longer sustainable in the sense that land is simply not available in the areas that are accessible by all the means of transportation and more importantly, where there is infrastructure.

Malam Bello also stated that with strong collaboration, a robust high capacity bus system could be worked out to meet the transportation needs of civil servants to greatly ease the hardship they face in transporting themselves to and from work.

Earlier, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Esan had solicited the assistance of the FCTA to improve the welfare of civil servants across the country, especially in the areas of affordable housing and transportation.

She said that it was worrisome that many civil servants cannot afford to own their own home, hence the government has to introduce the Federal Integrated Staff Housing (FISH) scheme designed to enable them own houses at affordable rates.

She disclosed that over 50,000 civil servants had signed up for the scheme and requested that the FCT Administration expedite action on the provision of land for the programme.

In a related development, the FCT administration has said that any structure built against Abuja master plan will be pulled down.

FCT Director, Development Control Department, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), Murktar Galadima, who stated this after the demolition of shanties and unapproved structures at Pewoyi, Tundun Wada near peace village in Lugbe.

Also speaking on the exercise in Lokogoma, Galadima said it was informed by the need to clear all structures on waterways and widen the channels for free flow of water.
