Professionals in the building sector have solicited cooperation among the key players to achieve quality housing in the country. They made the call at the opening of the 2017 edition of Lagos International Housing Fair, which had participants from within and outside the country.

The Chairman, Lagos International Housing Fair Committee, Moses Ogunleye, said professionals, researchers and government must partner on matters affecting the sector.

He spoke on the theme ”Quality Management in Housing Delivery,” at the annual exhibition of products and services in building and construction industry.

Ogunleye said the country should not only be concerned with increasing the number of housing units in the states or settlements, but must ensure that they meet the recommended standard.

He said: “There are no two opposing definitions for quality beside meeting the intended purpose, which is to protect the occupiers and give them maximum comfort.

“The theme became our choice to allow the event beam its searchlight on the need to build safe, functional, durable and top quality houses.”Also, the President of Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Dr. Bolarinde Patunola Ajayi, urged stakeholders to support government in funding the housing sector.

He canvassed collaboration with the pension authority to enable the utilisation of idle pension funds to boost the number of housing units in the country.

“There is the need for the deployment of relevant consultants and professionals by investors in the housing sector. The idea of rent to own policy of the Lagos state government is the right step in the right direction. Quality management must start with building well, starting well, choice of occupants of building and signing of covenant with tenants to make the property last long,” he said.

The President of Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria, Prof. Layi Egunjobi and the President, Association of Housing Corporation of Nigeria, Baba Adamu Muhammed also stressed the need for quality management in housing.
