In pursuit of its legislative agenda, the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change has sought for stakeholders’ support in global fight against climate change.

The committee saluted the courage of African Union (AU) for the adoption of the Great Green Wall (GGW) programme, stating that climate change is real and should be taken with utmost seriousness.

The chairman, Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim, said during the committee’s visit to the National Agency for the Great Green Wall that the GGW programme will eventually benefit all states in Nigeria, ECOWAS and African member states in generally.

For him, the major problem facing the environment sector is desertification; drought and gully erosion which if not adequately tackled would be dangerous not only to Nigerians but also to other countries in Africa.

Earlier, the Director General of the agency, Goni Ahmed maintained that GGW programme has been implemented in 11 frontline states of the Northern part of Nigeria, which covers 43 per cent of the total landmass of the country with the population of about 40 million.

Ahmed further said the Agency since its inception, has established kilometres of shelterbelts, hectares of woodlots and Orchards as well as a large number of boreholes sunk in most communities affected for the benefits of planted trees, livestock and the inhabitants.
