Engineers urged to utilise expertise in nation building

Professional engineers have been advised to put their professional expertise into use in the development of the nation.Chairman, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Apapa Branch, Ombugadu Garba made the appeal at the inauguration of the 7th Chairman of the Branch held at the Rockview Hotel, Apapa, Lagos.

Garba, who was newly installed as the seventh chairman of the branch, said the country is in dire need of economic recovery and overcoming its current security challenges.

He challenged upcoming engineers to be creative and visionary, adding that the era of looking for white-collar jobs is becoming very difficult by the day.

He said that it is important for engineers to realize their potentials and use their expertise to create wealth thereby contribution to professional developments as well as nation building.

According to him, the NSE plans to nurture graduate engineers and help them key into current national challenges. He said that the situations in the country at the moment need engineers and their expertise to help the country come out of its present challenges.

Garba revealed that the association intends to train engineers in capacity building noting that no country will develop more than its engineers.On infrastructure, he said that Nigeria engineers have crucial role to play but noted that political interference hinder them from performing and contributing their professional quota to the country.

He said: “If we are given the necessary support, we will continue to help the government realize its plans for the nation. There are ministries that are suppose to be headed by engineers, it is high time government allow professionals to lead such ministries.”Garba also urged the nation’s leaders to look inward to reprioritize, re-strategies and diversify the economy as well as build social networks and needful infrastructure.
